Happy New Year!
We hope you had a good holiday, enjoyed some time off, and survived the winter storms across the US. We are very excited at LiveWell HQ to share what’s new in 2024:
Try Our New Scorecard!
First out is the High Quality Care Culture scorecard. It shows how well individual long term care communities are doing on four domains of quality assurance and performance improvement:
Teamwork and Communication
Person-Directed Culture
Improvement Culture
Attention to Efficiency and Organization
These four areas are vital for staff and resident quality of life.
Doing them well reduces falls, medication errors, and staff turnover while improving the bottom line.
We created this scorecard after analyzing and comparing all the major quality accreditations available to long term care facilities and pinpointing the operational areas for which staff are responsible. A big shout out to Jennifer Connor-Smith who did the initial crosswalk, Ann McQueen and Marcus Ingle who created the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) rubric, and Steve Mitchell who designed the scorecard..
We’re eager to get your feedback, so please try the High Quality Care Scorecard and let us know what you think. It can be filled out by anyone associated with or working in a community – owners, management companies, administrators, and staff. We have found that different individuals from the same facility score their community similarly.
Great Progress from the LiveWell Learning Collaborative
Twenty-three LiveWell learners from The Springs Living, Hearth and Truss, Guardian Angel Homes, and Rose Linn Vintage Place are enrolled in our current learning collaborative. They are creating community quality boards to provide visual management for staff, and they’re getting team buy-in on the huddles. They’re also learning how to incorporate voting and compliments into their work every shift, every day.
Here’s what people are saying:
“Last week, we implemented the leadership practice of getting feedback from the team on what's going well and areas for improvement. It helped the management team feel less anxious and focus on solutions rather than just problems.” — Margo Garibay-Lavin, Office Manager at The Springs Living, Lake Oswego
“I've been working with staff at my community to focus on how they can improve things they're already doing well rather than just focusing on failures.” — Tiffany Berberet, Assistant Administrator at Guardian Angel Homes, Post Falls
“I talked about the very first time we went through LiveWell and how we generated the buzz with the staff…I’ve had all the staff speak up about what they felt was the most important or critical issue in their immediate work environment and campus wide.” — Dakota Klinkefus, Administrator at Guardian Angel Homes, Post Falls
Why Embrace LiveWell?
Staff are exhausted, overwhelmed and burned out — and when they leave the industry it’s often for good.
Lack of staff continuity increases the risk for falls, med errors, on the job injuries — and even litigation. We’ve documented the high cost of not developing a culture of improvement. And we know that financial pressures faced by owners are real.
We’ve created a program that reduces falls, med errors, and injury by giving teams the tools to create a positive workplace culture and reduce chaos. The LiveWell Method ensures that team members can spend time on safety, and all the things that create quality of life for residents and staff. We do this by focusing on five core principles:
ENGAGE: LiveWell provides the structure, practices and tools that create an inclusive community where everyone belongs.
EMPOWER: These same practices and tools improve teamwork and communication, making it easy for people to take action to improve the care and safety of residents and staff.
EXPLORE: We help individuals and teams become problem solvers who are curious about what’s happening, open to new ideas, and excited by new technologies.
EXCEL: LiveWell-trained teams know what excellent care looks like, use their strengths to model superior teamwork and communication, and are skilled in best practices of tracking, measuring, root cause analysis, and tests of change.
EVOLVE: Over time, organizations that are committed to excellence and a growth mindset become learning organizations. They develop a culture where failures and mistakes are learning opportunities. Where continuous improvement is the way things are done, where innovation is nurtured.
Communities that have done LiveWell in the past have had excellent results. Click on the image below to see the PSU evaluation.
