Improving EMS Response to Long Term Care Facilities
Did you know that Emergency Medical System (EMS) in Oregon is working hard to help Oregonians understand how to best utilize their help? When people call 911, a local emergency response team jumps into action. But if the situation is not an actual emergency and then another 911 call is received, teams from farther away – even other towns and counties -- must spring into action. EMS is finding that this “ripple effect” takes away resources that are needed for real emergency responses to fires, accidents, and other situations, especially in rural areas.
What can you do if you have a situation that may or may not be an emergency but is still scary, such as a fall? You can call your local ambulance company directly or use the local non-emergency number.
EMS has begun a statewide effort to educate high-use members of the long-term care community on how to use EMS resources effectively. At this month’s Meet Up, we spoke with Sid Humphries, the point person coordinating the State’s efforts. He shared a video from Clackamas County about best practices when contacting your local EMS providers.
If you would like to invite EMS staff to your community for a hands-on educational session about EMS’s role and their advice on how to handle common situations in LTCFs, please contact Sid Humphries, Sidney.l.humphries@dhsoha.state.or.us.
