The Advantages of Person-Centered Care
How this practice builds dignity and community
Recently, we had the chance to sit down with Matt Gannon to discuss person-centered care. Matt has worked as a professional caregiver. He is also on the Board of Directors at Making Oregon Vital for Elders (MOVE), an organization that works to change how Oregonians think about aging and long-term care. We discussed what person-centered care looks like, how one can lose track of it, and how making it a focus can benefit caregivers and residents alike.
Matt thinks about person-centered care in three ways: relationships, preferences, and inclusion. Everything we do must be driven by these three things in order to honor individuals as people, empower dignity in decision-making, and build meaningful connections with others.
Matt left us with one change we can make today to emphasize person-centered care: Be intentional about getting to know those we care for.
